The demonstration on Saturday on board Disa Leader reaffirms Shane as one of the best jockeys in the world with more than 100 Group 1 wins in the world. In a race that was not in the bag at the start, against the best 4 year olds in Mauritius, including Seattle Ice, Space Captain, War of Conquest (6 wins in Mauritius) and the likes of Space Captain and Mdansi – the race was won by the magical tactician on a choppy track – and Shane proved that he remains one of the best in the world by judging the right tactics to win the race in style.
At the same time, he also proved that it was no fluke that he won so many Group races and more than 2000 wins to date.
The first classic winner was indeed the obvious favourite of the race, but with 60 kg, Disa Leader had a tough task against good horses to land his second Group win, and the second Group win for Shane and Gilbert for the current season.
Shane had to change strategy and tactics prior to the race because of the condition of the track on the day being choppy with the penometer showing 2.9.
Shane, showed that he remains one of the best jockey in the world, working out his opponents and keeping his mount 3 wide, and the tactics paid and he won the race in style.
Trained by Gilbert Rousset, Disa Leader made it two in a row ( a Group 2 and a Group 3).
Prior to that race, Shane started the day with a stylish win on Pardon me Boy, who recorded his 5th win in only 11 starts in Mauritius (and placed 4 times). Pardon me Boy, known not to handle a wet track – was well ridden by Shane to make sure he passed the post before other runners by again – using his tactical skills, starting his descent at the right time to surprise his opponents.
Gilbert Rousset jumped to second place in the Championship and Disa Leader tops the table of the Championship for best horses. Strongly recommended by Vincent Doger de Speville, based in Durban, the gelding made all owners proud of their acquisition and its connections are confident that he will win the Mauritian Derby – a 4 year old championship – after winning the first leg, the Mauritius L’Express Turf Mauritius Derby Trial Cup (Group 3).
